BONEPWA+ Commemorates International Human Rights Day 2024 in Palapye: “Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All”
On 10 December 2024, the Botswana Network of People Living with HIV and AIDS (BONEPWA+) joined the rest of the world in commemorating International Human Rights Day under the global theme “Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All.” This year’s national commemoration took place in Palapye, bringing together community members, leaders, partners, and networks of people living with HIV (PLHIV) to reflect on the importance of protecting human rights in Botswana’s HIV and health response.
The event was both reflective and empowering filled with heartfelt testimonies, interactive dialogues, and solidarity messages that underscored how human rights remain central to achieving a Botswana where no one is left behind.
As the national coordinating body of people living with HIV, BONEPWA+ led the commemoration to highlight the lived realities of PLHIV, key populations, and vulnerable groups who continue to face stigma, discrimination, and barriers in accessing health and justice services. Through community voices, participants discussed how human rights violations often hinder access to care and how strengthening accountability mechanisms can protect the dignity and freedoms of all citizens.
In her remarks, the BONEPWA+ Executive Director emphasized that human rights are not optional in the HIV response, they are foundational.
“Our advocacy is rooted in the belief that dignity is non-negotiable. Every person has the right to health, to safety, and to be treated with respect. Human rights are the bridge that connects equality and public health,” she said.
Through its ongoing Human Rights and Breaking Barriers project, supported by national and international partners, BONEPWA+ continues to build community capacity to identify, document, and respond to human rights violations, particularly those affecting PLHIV and key populations. The organization also works closely with government and civil society partners to promote justice and strengthen legal protections.
As the sun set over Palapye, the day ended not only as a commemoration but as a renewal of BONEPWA+’s commitment to human rights, equality, and community empowerment. The message that echoed throughout the event was powerful and clear- a Botswana built on dignity, freedom, and justice is possible when every voice counts and every person is valued.
